Have you ever sat in the office and just listened? A constant hum is always around from copiers, lights, air-con, computers and printers etc. Workplaces are one of the biggest energy draining offenders. Why not try to reduce energy consumption in your office? With energy costs and bills on the rise across the country now is the time to implement greener practices at the office and home.
Here are five 5 simple ways that we can all help trim down energy consumption:
1. Shut down your computer when you leave.
Two minutes at the start and end of the day to boot up and log off your computer is a small amount of effort to save a LOT of carbon emissions into the environment.
2. Use compact Fluorescent Light globes.
Fluorescent bulbs are 4-5 times more efficient than traditional light bulbs. Longer lasting and eco-friendly they use less energy and release less mercury.
3. Install an “Occupancy Detector”.
When people are not in the room you can lessen the energy consumption by keeping the lights off. Places like the bathrooms, kitchens and interview rooms are the main offenders. Where ever possible, only light the room that is in use.
4. Don’t overload the heating and cooling system.
Fresh air, insulation, open doors and windows are ALWAYS a better option then air-conditioning. If the climate clearly requires air-con, the suggested temperature for all seasons is 24 degrees. Remember to turn the heating/cooling system OFF at the end of the day!
5. Invite sunlight and plant life into the office.
Natural lighting and plant life in the office are free, clean and help to increase the mood and morale of staff. Plants are known to reduce toxins in the air and moderate the temperature. Every little bit counts, whether it’s in the office or at home, get your clients and co-workers involved in creating a more eco-friendly workplace and lowering running costs. Every small change helps us towards a greener and healthier environment.
